The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) recently welcomed its final two of four brand-new, 24-meter fast patrol boats built by renowned French shipbuilder OCEA. These vessels, christened BRP MALAMAWI (FPB-2403) and BRP KALANGGAMAN (FPB-2404), join their sister ships BRP BORACAY and BRP PANGLAO in bolstering the PCG's maritime security and safety capabilities.

Following their arrival in Subic last December, the vessels were officially commissioned in January 2019 at the PCG National Headquarters. The ceremony included esteemed guests like Department of Budget and Management Secretary Benjamin Diokno and Department of Transportation Undersecretary Gary V. De Guzman.

These fast patrol boats, named after prominent Philippine tourist destinations, boast impressive agility and sturdiness. Reaching speeds of up to 30 knots, they are perfectly suited for patrolling the archipelago's vast coastlines and intricate waterways.

This acquisition marks the successful completion of the Philippine Ports and Coast Guard Capability Development Project, a collaborative effort between the Department of Transportation and the PCG. The project aims to strengthen the agency's ability to enforce maritime safety and security, as well as safeguard the marine environment.

Former PCG Commandant, Admiral Elson Hermogino, praised the new vessels, highlighting their modern technology and adaptability to the Philippine seas.

He emphasized that these additions will significantly enhance the PCG's operational efficiency in various missions, including:

Patrolling maritime borders,

Combating smuggling and illegal activities,

Conducting search and rescue operations,

Protecting the marine environment.

With the addition of these advanced patrol boats, the Philippine Coast Guard is well-equipped to secure its waters and safeguard its citizens. This investment reflects the country's commitment to modernizing its maritime defense and ensuring the safety and security of its vast archipelago.
