Sikorsky to Study Open System Architecture for NATO's Next-Generation Rotorcraft

February 5, 2024 - The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded Lockheed Martin a third study contract related to the Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) program.

The study, awarded on December 13, 2023, will see Lockheed Martin's Sikorsky subsidiary identify, analyze, and compare open system architecture (OSA) concepts that could potentially fulfill the NGRC capability requirement. The outcome of the study will help inform future platform concepts.

Speed is the defining objective of the NGRC effort, with a required cruise speed of 220 knots. As noted by Andy Adams, vice-president of Future Vertical Lift at Sikorsky, the company will leverage its X2 rotorcraft technology as part of its NGRC OSA work.

The NGRC program is a multinational effort to develop a new medium-lift helicopter for NATO members. The program is currently in the concept definition phase, and the OSA study is one of several studies being conducted to inform the development of the future platform.

The NGRC program is expected to deliver a new helicopter that is faster, more survivable, and more affordable than current platforms. The program is also expected to create jobs and boost the economies of participating NATO members.
