Germany U-turns on Saudi Eurofighter sale

Germany January 8, 2024 – Germany has reversed its longstanding opposition to continued sales of Eurofighter jets to Saudi Arabia, but the move is likely to be controversial.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced her policy change in comments to journalists during a visit to Israel.

"Since Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 2023, the world, and especially here in the Middle East, has become a completely different place," Barbock said.

"In this new reality, we must adapt our policies and take into account the security interests of our allies.''

The decision is a major victory for Saudi Arabia, which has been trying to buy Eurofighters for several years.

The deal is worth an estimated 10 billion euros. However, this decision is likely to be criticized by human rights groups who condemn Saudi Arabia's serious human rights violations.

In 2018, Saudi agents killed journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The decision could also damage Germany's reputation as a defender of human rights.
